The 8-day Marangu Route journey is the oldest and most established path to Africa's highest peak, offering permanent hut accommodations and a structured mountain itinerary. Trekkers ascend through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
The journey now begins with a dedicated arrival day followed by pre-climb preparation on Day 2 before the ascent starts.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Check in, relax and recover from your journey.
Meet the lead guide for a detailed route and safety briefing, full gear check and any final equipment arrangements. The remainder of the day is kept relaxed before the climb.
Trek begins from Marangu Gate (1,860m) through dense rainforest to Mandara Hut, encountering unique flora and fauna. Optional side trip to Maundi Crater for panoramic views. Driving/trekking time: 45-60 minutes from Moshi.
Trek continues into heath and moorland zone, with clear views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. High-altitude flora such as giant lobelias and groundsels appear.
Active rest day to acclimatize. Short hike to higher elevation and return to Horombo Hut to improve summit success rates.
Trek across the barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, reaching Kibo Hut at base of final summit climb.
Midnight summit push to Gilman's Point and Uhuru Peak. Descent returns to Horombo Hut for overnight stay.
Trek down from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate through moorland and rainforest. Summit certificates awarded at gate, followed by hotel transfer.
